Brian Crower Cam Gear Clamping Bolts – Set of 4 | Toyota 2JZ / 1JZ | BC8891
Set of 4 bolts — covers one camshaft. The 2JZ and 1JZ are DOHC engines with two camshafts per bank. A complete cam gear bolt replacement for both intake and exhaust cams requires 2 sets (8 bolts total).
Torque to specification. Cam gear clamping bolts that are under-torqued or improperly installed can allow the cam gear to shift under load, causing timing drift and potential engine damage.
Brian Crower BC8891 cam gear clamping bolt set for Toyota 2JZ and 1JZ inline-6 DOHC engines. Set of 4 bolts for one camshaft. Used with adjustable vernier cam gears during performance cam installation, timing upgrades, and engine rebuilds. 0.18 lbs. Ships fast across Canada and the US.
Cam Gear Clamping Bolts — Function and Importance
On Toyota’s 2JZ and 1JZ DOHC engines, the cam gear is mounted on the end of the camshaft and retained by a set of 4 clamping bolts that pass through the gear into the camshaft end. These bolts clamp the gear in the set timing position and must be torqued correctly to prevent any rotational movement of the gear relative to the camshaft under engine load. On adjustable vernier cam gears — which use a slotted bolt pattern to allow cam timing to be dialled in degrees of advance or retard — the clamping bolts are the sole means of locking the gear in the selected timing position once adjustment is made. A cam gear that moves under load will cause timing to drift, resulting in immediate power loss and potential valve-to-piston contact depending on how far timing shifts. Using quality, correctly-spec’d hardware from a trusted manufacturer like Brian Crower is non-negotiable for a reliable high-performance 2JZ or 1JZ build.
When You Need These Bolts
These bolts are required when installing aftermarket adjustable cam gears on a 2JZ or 1JZ — particularly when the cam gears specify new hardware rather than OEM bolt reuse. They are also commonly replaced during engine rebuilds where cam gear hardware is refreshed as standard practice, or when the OEM bolts have been torqued and removed multiple times and are approaching their service limit. Brian Crower includes these bolts as the correct hardware for use with their own cam gears, and they are compatible with other quality adjustable cam gears using the same bolt pattern.
2JZ and 1JZ Platform
The Toyota 2JZ (2JZ-GTE twin-turbo, 2JZ-GE naturally aspirated) and 1JZ (1JZ-GTE twin-turbo/single-turbo, 1JZ-GE naturally aspirated) share the same inline-6 DOHC architecture and cam gear bolt pattern, making the BC8891 applicable across both engine families. The 2JZ-GTE is the engine of the Supra MK4 (JZA80) and one of the most tuned inline-6 engines in motorsport history. The 1JZ-GTE is found in the Supra MK3, Chaser, Cresta, Mark II, and Soarer — a popular engine in drift and time attack builds.
DOHC — Order 2 Sets for Both Cams
The 2JZ and 1JZ are dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) engines with separate intake and exhaust camshafts, each with its own cam gear and 4-bolt clamping set. This BC8891 set covers one camshaft. If you are replacing cam gear hardware on both the intake and exhaust camshafts — which is standard practice during a cam gear replacement or engine build — order 2 sets (8 bolts total).
Set of 4 — covers one camshaft. Order 2 sets for both intake and exhaust cams. Torque to Brian Crower’s specified value — do not substitute generic hardware. Verify cam timing with a degree wheel after installation and before startup. Re-check cam gear bolt torque after initial heat cycles.
