Brian Crower Single Valve Spring & Titanium Retainer Kit – Nissan SR20DE / SR20DET

Build your SR20DE or SR20DET for high-RPM reliability with the Brian Crower Single Valve Spring & Titanium Retainer Kit — a complete valve spring and retainer upgrade kit engineered for the Nissan SR20DE and SR20DET. Upgraded valve springs provide the increased seat pressure and open pressure needed to prevent valve float at high RPM, while titanium retainers reduce reciprocating valve train mass for improved high-RPM response and reduced spring fatigue. A critical engine building component for any SR20 build running performance camshafts, high-lift profiles, or extended high-RPM operation.

Key Features:

  • Single valve spring design — performance single spring with increased seat pressure and open pressure for reliable valve control at high RPM
  • Titanium retainers — lightweight titanium retainers reduce reciprocating valve train mass for improved high-RPM response and reduced spring fatigue
  • SR20DE / SR20DET specific — engineered for the Nissan SR20DE and SR20DET cylinder head valve train geometry
  • Complete kit — includes springs and retainers for all valves (intake and exhaust) for a full valve train upgrade
  • Brian Crower quality — manufactured to Brian Crower’s motorsport-grade standards with decades of professional racing application
  • Camshaft upgrade compatible — designed to work with performance camshaft upgrades that require increased valve spring pressure

Performance Benefits:

  • Valve Float Prevention: Increased valve spring seat pressure and open pressure prevent valve float at high RPM — the condition where the valve spring can no longer control the valve’s motion and the valve fails to close fully, causing power loss, misfires, and potential valve-to-piston contact
  • Titanium Retainer Weight Reduction: Titanium retainers are significantly lighter than steel retainers, reducing the reciprocating mass of the valve train. Less reciprocating mass allows the valve springs to control valve motion more effectively at high RPM, extending the engine’s reliable rev limit and reducing spring fatigue over time
  • High-RPM Reliability: The combination of increased spring pressure and reduced reciprocating mass delivers reliable valve train control at the extended high-RPM operation that performance SR20 builds demand
  • Camshaft Upgrade Support: Performance camshafts with increased lift and duration require higher valve spring pressures to control the valve at high RPM — Brian Crower’s spring kit provides the pressure needed to safely run performance camshaft profiles
  • Reduced Spring Fatigue: Titanium retainers’ reduced mass lowers the dynamic load on the valve springs during high-RPM operation, extending spring service life and maintaining consistent spring pressure over time

Specifications:

Fitment Information:

  • Nissan SR20DE — naturally aspirated variant (S13 180SX, P10 Primera, and others)
  • Nissan SR20DET — turbocharged variant (S13/S14/S15 Silvia, S13/S14 180SX, and others)
  • Note: Verify your specific SR20 variant and cylinder head configuration before ordering. Confirm compatibility with your camshaft selection with Brian Crower before purchasing.
  • Installation: Professional installation by an experienced engine builder strongly recommended
  • Camshaft Pairing: Verify spring pressure compatibility with your camshaft specification — spring seat pressure and open pressure must be appropriate for the camshaft’s lift and duration profile

What’s Included:

  • Brian Crower single valve springs — complete set (all intake and exhaust)
  • Brian Crower titanium retainers — complete set (all intake and exhaust)
  • Brian Crower specification sheet

Installation Notes:

  • Professional installation by an experienced engine builder strongly recommended — valve spring replacement requires a valve spring compressor and precise assembly procedures
  • Measure valve stem height and installed spring height before installation to verify correct spring installation length
  • Check valve-to-piston clearance if running performance camshafts with increased lift
  • Inspect all valve stem seals and replace as necessary during installation
  • Verify correct retainer-to-keeper engagement after installation
  • Degree camshafts after installation if running performance cams to verify correct timing

Why Upgrade Valve Springs and Retainers?

The factory SR20DE/DET valve springs are designed for the stock camshaft profiles and the engine’s factory rev limit — adequate for stock operation but insufficient for performance builds running higher-lift camshafts, extended high-RPM operation, or aggressive tuning. As engine RPM increases, the valve spring must work harder to control the valve’s motion against the camshaft’s increasing acceleration forces. When the spring can no longer keep up, valve float occurs — the valve fails to close fully, causing power loss, misfires, and in severe cases, valve-to-piston contact and catastrophic engine damage. Upgraded valve springs with higher seat and open pressure prevent float at the RPM levels that performance SR20 builds operate at. Titanium retainers reduce the reciprocating mass that the springs must control, making the entire valve train more efficient and reliable at high RPM.

Single Spring vs. Dual Spring:

Brian Crower’s BC0200 uses a single spring design — one spring per valve rather than a dual (inner and outer) spring arrangement. Single spring designs are lighter and simpler than dual spring setups, with reduced reciprocating mass and easier installation. For most performance SR20 builds running street and track camshafts, a quality single spring with appropriate pressure is sufficient for reliable valve control. Dual spring setups are typically reserved for extreme high-RPM race applications where the additional spring pressure and redundancy of a dual arrangement are required. The BC0200’s single spring design, combined with titanium retainers, delivers the performance and reliability needed for the vast majority of SR20 performance builds.

Why Brian Crower?

Brian Crower has been manufacturing high-performance engine components — camshafts, connecting rods, valves, valve springs, and pistons — for professional racing and performance applications since 1986. Their SR20 valve spring and retainer lineup is one of the most trusted in the Nissan performance community, used by professional engine builders and serious enthusiasts worldwide. Brian Crower’s application-specific engineering ensures correct spring rates, installed heights, and retainer geometry for the SR20 cylinder head.

Perfect For:

  • SR20DET builds running performance camshafts that require increased valve spring pressure
  • High-RPM SR20DE and SR20DET builds where factory valve springs are limiting the reliable rev ceiling
  • Engine rebuilds where factory valve springs are being replaced with a performance upgrade as part of a complete head build
  • Forced induction SR20DET builds running aggressive tunes and extended high-RPM operation
  • Anyone building a serious SR20 who wants Brian Crower’s proven valve spring and titanium retainer engineering

Pro Tip: Pair with Brian Crower SR20 camshafts for a matched valve train upgrade. Brian Crower’s camshaft and spring specifications are developed together — using matched components ensures the spring pressure is appropriate for the camshaft’s lift and duration profile, eliminating the guesswork of mixing brands.

Note: Professional installation strongly recommended. Verify spring pressure compatibility with your camshaft specification before ordering. Check valve-to-piston clearance if running increased-lift camshafts.
