MLS Construction — Multi-Layer Stainless Steel with Viton

Cometic’s MLS head gaskets use a three-layer stainless steel design: two outer layers that are embossed and coated on both sides with Viton (a fluoroelastomer rubber rated to 250°C / 482°F), and an uncoated stainless steel centre shim layer. The embossed outer layers conform to minor surface irregularities and maintain a positive seal under thermal cycling and combustion pressure. The Viton coating eliminates the need for sealants or RTV and provides excellent resistance to oil, coolant, and combustion gases. The stainless steel construction resists the shearing force generated by aluminium-to-aluminium and aluminium-to-iron thermal expansion differentials. MLS gaskets can be reused if undamaged and the sealing surfaces are within spec — confirm with your engine builder.

96mm Bore — Overbored Engines

This gasket is sized for a 96mm cylinder bore. The OEM VQ35DE and VQ35HR bore diameter is 95.5mm. The 96mm bore is for VQ engines that have been overbored during a rebuild — typically 0.020" (0.5mm) over stock to clean up cylinder walls or accommodate oversized pistons. Do not order this gasket for a standard/stock-bore VQ engine. If your engine is stock bore, the correct Cometic gasket is the 95.5mm version.

Right Hand (RH) — Single Gasket

The C4361-040 is the right-hand (RH) head gasket — passenger’s side, Bank 2 on standard North American VQ orientation. The VQ V6 requires two head gaskets for a complete replacement. 0.040" Compressed Thickness

The compressed operating thickness is 0.040". OEM VQ head gaskets are typically 0.027"–0.030" compressed. The thicker 0.040" gasket is used where additional compressed thickness is required — most commonly when the head or deck surface has been milled, where a compression ratio reduction is desired for a forced induction build, or where Cometic’s thicker MLS stack is specified by the engine builder. Confirm required compressed thickness with your engine builder based on your specific head and deck measurements, piston deck height, and combustion chamber volume.
