Why the GR Yaris Needs an Intercooler Upgrade

The G16E-GTS is a purpose-built performance engine with exceptional tuning potential — but the OEM intercooler is sized for the stock power output and heat rejection requirements of a road-registered vehicle. On track, under repeated hard acceleration runs, or at elevated boost pressure on a stage 2 or higher tune, the OEM intercooler saturates with heat rapidly. As charge air temperature rises, the ECU pulls timing and reduces boost to protect the engine — resulting in progressive power loss over successive laps or pulls. The do88 ICM-390-S replaces the OEM core with a significantly larger bar-and-plate aluminium core that provides substantially more thermal mass and frontal cooling area, maintaining lower charge air temperatures across sustained high-load use and resisting heat soak more effectively than the OEM unit.

do88 Engineering — Large Core for the GR Yaris

do88 developed the ICM-390-S specifically for the GXPA16 chassis and the G16E-GTS’s boost circuit geometry. The 390-series core is one of the largest intercoolers available for this platform — engineered for builds targeting sustained track performance and high power outputs where charge temperature management is critical. The core uses a bar-and-plate aluminium construction for maximum heat exchange efficiency and durability under repeated thermal cycling. Black silicone couplers at the end tank connections provide a secure, flexible, heat-resistant seal compatible with the do88 charge pipe kit (TR-350-S-DO88).

The ICM-390-S is the centrepiece of do88’s GR Yaris charge cooling and intake system. It pairs directly with the do88 charge pipe kit (TR-350-S-DO88) — which is dimensioned specifically for the do88 intercooler end tanks — and the do88 intake system (LF-200-S) for a complete, matched front-end performance upgrade. Purchasing the intercooler without the companion charge pipe kit requires sourcing or fabricating compatible charge pipes — the OEM pipes will not fit the do88 end tank dimensions.

Charge Pipe Kit — Required Companion

The do88 charge pipe kit (TR-350-S-DO88, sold separately) is required to connect this intercooler into the GR Yaris boost circuit. The OEM charge pipes are not compatible with the do88 intercooler end tanks. Order both the intercooler and charge pipe kit together for a complete installation.

ECU Tune — Required to Realise the Benefit

Lower post-intercooler charge air temperatures allow the ECU to run more aggressive ignition timing and boost pressure without risk of knock — but only if the calibration is updated to target those conditions. The stock ECU tune is calibrated conservatively around the OEM intercooler’s thermal limitations. With the do88 intercooler installed, a GR Yaris-experienced tuner can optimise timing, boost targets, and fuelling to fully exploit the improved charge cooling. The intercooler upgrade is most effective as part of a staged tune, not as a standalone bolt-on.
