True Rear — What It Means for the E46

The BMW E46 3 Series uses a multi-link rear suspension where the factory spring and shock damper are separate components — the spring sits on a perch separate from the shock body. Most budget E46 coilover kits retain this setup, replacing only the shock while leaving the spring arrangement largely unchanged. This “spring on perch” configuration limits rear ride height adjustability and does not provide the consistent spring-damper geometry of a true coilover unit.

The Silver’s Neomax True Rear set replaces both the spring and shock with a single coilover unit at the rear — the spring wraps directly around the shock body as on a conventional coilover. This provides more precise rear ride height adjustment, more consistent spring-damper alignment under compression and rebound, and a cleaner installation. For an E46 used on track or for spirited driving where rear suspension geometry consistency matters, the True Rear setup is meaningfully better than the spring-on-perch alternative.
