Mishimoto Top-Mount Intercooler Kit | 2002-2007 Subaru WRX / 2004-2007 STi | EJ20 / EJ25 | Silver Core / Red Hoses | Lifetime Warranty | MMTMIC-WRX-01SLRD
Mishimoto Top-Mount Intercooler Kit – 2002–2007 Subaru WRX / 2004–2007 STi | EJ20 / EJ25 | Silver Core / Red Hoses | MMTMIC-WRX-01SLRD
The Mishimoto TMIC kit is the definitive top-mount intercooler upgrade for the GD/GG chassis WRX and STi — replacing the factory intercooler’s undersized tube-and-fin core with a massive bar-and-plate unit that delivers 20–40°F lower intake air temperatures, eliminates heat soak under sustained high-load driving, and provides the cooling headroom that modified EJ builds need to support increased boost reliably. Direct bolt-on replacement for the factory TMIC. Includes red silicone hoses, stainless clamps, and all mounting hardware. Backed by Mishimoto’s Lifetime Warranty.
Why the Factory TMIC Is the First Bottleneck on a Modified EJ
The GD/GG WRX and STi use a top-mount intercooler layout — the intercooler sits directly on top of the engine under the hood scoop, in one of the hottest areas of the engine bay. The factory TMIC is a modest tube-and-fin unit sized for stock boost and stock power levels. In normal street driving it manages adequately, but under sustained high-load conditions — back-to-back pulls, track sessions, mountain runs — the small factory core heat-soaks rapidly. Once heat-soaked, the intercooler can no longer cool the charge air effectively, intake air temperatures rise, the ECU pulls timing to protect the engine, and power drops noticeably. On a modified EJ running increased boost, the factory TMIC reaches its limits even faster and becomes a genuine reliability concern as elevated IATs increase the risk of detonation.
The Mishimoto’s bar-and-plate core is significantly larger than the factory unit, providing dramatically more surface area for heat dissipation. Bar-and-plate construction also resists heat soak more effectively than tube-and-fin — the denser core takes longer to saturate with heat and recovers faster between pulls, maintaining consistent cooling performance across extended driving sessions.
Key Features
- 20–40°F IAT Reduction: Mishimoto’s tested intake air temperature reduction vs the factory TMIC — cooler, denser charge air means more oxygen available for combustion, more power, and a lower risk of detonation. Actual results vary with ambient temperature, boost level, and driving conditions
- Bar-and-Plate Core Construction: Superior to the factory tube-and-fin design — internal fins create turbulence that dramatically increases heat transfer efficiency, and the denser core structure resists heat soak more effectively under sustained high-load driving. The correct core type for any modified EJ build running increased boost
- Silver Powder-Coated Finish: Corrosion-resistant powder coat withstands high temperatures and harsh conditions without fading or peeling — clean, professional appearance in the engine bay
- Red Silicone Hoses Included: Complete set of red silicone hoses replaces the factory rubber hoses — silicone is significantly more heat-resistant and durable than rubber, will not crack or deteriorate with age and heat cycling. Red colour adds a premium engine bay appearance consistent with the WRX/STi performance aesthetic
- Direct Bolt-On Replacement: Designed as a direct replacement for the factory GD/GG TMIC — no modifications required. Includes stainless steel clamps and all necessary mounting hardware. Installation time approximately 2–3 hours with basic hand tools
- Supports 400+ HP Builds: Provides the cooling headroom required for turbo upgrades, increased boost, and high-power EJ builds where the factory TMIC is wholly inadequate
- Mishimoto Lifetime Warranty: Every Mishimoto intercooler is backed by their Lifetime Warranty — covering defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product

Installation Notes: Check for boost leaks after installation — inspect all hose connections and clamps before the first pull. Monitor IATs with an Accessport or boost gauge to verify performance improvement. Use dielectric grease on any sensor connections disturbed during installation. Professional installation recommended if unfamiliar with intercooler R&R on the GD/GG chassis.
