Short Hub Design

NRG’s SRK (Short Hub) series is designed to minimise the depth added between the steering column and the aftermarket steering wheel. A standard hub adapter adds depth that pushes the wheel further from the driver — the short hub design reduces this protrusion, keeping the aftermarket wheel at a more natural driving position. For drivers who are particular about steering wheel depth relative to seating position, the short hub is the correct choice over a standard depth hub.

ND MX-5 Specific

The SRK-168H is machined specifically for the Mazda ND MX-5 Miata (2016+) steering column spline and bolt pattern — covering both the ND1 (2016–2023) and ND2 (2024+) generations. It does not fit the NC (2006–2015), NB (1999–2005), or NA (1990–1997) Miata. Fitment on the Fiat 124 Spider (which shares the ND platform) should be confirmed separately before ordering.

Horn Contact

The “H” suffix in SRK-168H indicates this hub includes a horn contact — a slip ring that maintains the horn circuit connection when an aftermarket steering wheel with a horn button is installed. Without a horn contact, a horn button on the aftermarket wheel will not function.

Typical Installation Stack

NRG hub adapters are designed to work as part of a steering wheel conversion stack:

• NRG Quick Release — attaches to the hub adapter, allows the steering wheel to be quickly removed and reinstalled (sold separately)

The quick release and steering wheel must be sourced separately. Confirm quick release and wheel bolt pattern compatibility (NRG uses a standard 6-bolt 70mm pattern across most of their product line).

Airbag & SRS

The ND MX-5 factory steering wheel contains the driver’s airbag and connects to the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) via the column clock spring. Removing the factory wheel eliminates the driver’s airbag protection. The SRS system must be properly disabled during installation to avoid accidental airbag deployment. The clock spring should be secured in its neutral position after the factory wheel is removed to prevent damage to the spiral cable. Professional installation by someone familiar with SRS system disabling procedures is strongly recommended.
