What Is a CHRA?

The CHRA (Centre Housing Rotating Assembly) is the heart of a turbocharger — the precision-engineered rotating core that contains the compressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft, and centre housing with its bearing system. The CHRA is the component responsible for compressing intake air and is the primary determinant of a turbo’s performance characteristics, spool speed, and power capacity.

CHRAs are purchased separately from turbine housings and compressor covers for two primary purposes:

• Turbo Rebuild: Replacing a worn, damaged, or failed CHRA in an existing GT28-series turbocharger shell — restoring the turbo to factory or upgraded performance without replacing the complete unit. A cost-effective alternative to purchasing a complete replacement turbo when the housing is in good condition
