Garrett GT2871R Dual Ball Bearing Turbocharger – 0.86 A/R T25 | 71mm Compressor | 300–475 HP | 836026-5020S

The Garrett GT2871R is one of the most proven and respected performance turbochargers in the aftermarket — a dual ball bearing turbo engineered for 2.0L to 2.5L engine applications targeting 300 to 475 horsepower. The GT2871R delivers the fast spool response of a smaller turbo with the top-end airflow capacity of a larger unit, making it a benchmark choice for high-horsepower street and track builds on platforms like the Nissan SR20DET, KA24DE, and various Subaru and Mazda 2.0L–2.5L engines. This listing is for the 0.86 A/R T25-flanged turbine housing — the larger A/R option, optimised for maximum top-end power output over the smaller 0.64 A/R variant.

0.86 A/R vs. 0.64 A/R – Which Housing Is Right for Your Build?

The GT2871R is available with two turbine housing A/R options — understanding the difference is critical for selecting the right configuration for your application:

  • 0.86 A/R (this listing): Larger turbine housing cross-section — lower exhaust backpressure at high RPM, better top-end power and peak flow. Slightly slower spool compared to the 0.64 A/R. Recommended for more heavily modified engines, higher power targets (400–475 HP range), dedicated track use, or builds where peak power at high RPM is the priority over low-RPM response
  • 0.64 A/R: Smaller turbine housing — faster spool, stronger low-to-mid RPM response, slightly lower peak flow ceiling. Better suited for street-driven builds, lower power targets, or applications where drivability and low-RPM torque are priorities

If you are unsure which A/R is right for your build, consult your tuner before ordering.

Key Features

  • Garrett Dual Ball Bearing Cartridge: The GT2871R uses Garrett’s genuine dual ball bearing CHRA (Centre Housing Rotating Assembly) — replacing the conventional journal bearing design with precision ball bearings on both the compressor and turbine sides of the shaft. Dual ball bearings reduce rotating friction significantly compared to journal bearings, delivering faster spool response, reduced turbo lag, and superior thrust capacity under sustained boost. Ball bearing turbos also typically require less oil pressure to operate correctly and are more tolerant of oil supply interruptions than journal bearing designs
  • 71mm Compressor Wheel – High-Flow Efficiency: The GT2871R’s 71mm compressor wheel is sized for peak efficiency in the 300–475 HP range on 2.0L–2.5L displacement engines — large enough to support significant power targets without the excessive lag of a larger compressor, and efficient enough to maintain good response across the RPM range. The compressor wheel is machined from high-strength aluminium alloy and aerodynamically optimised for high-boost efficiency
  • 0.86 A/R T25 Turbine Housing: The T25 turbine inlet flange is the standard fitment for Nissan SR20DET, KA24DE, and many other 2.0L–2.5L JDM and domestic platforms — making the GT2871R a common direct-fit or near-direct-fit upgrade on these applications with appropriate manifold and downpipe work. The 0.86 A/R housing provides low exhaust backpressure at high RPM for maximum top-end power extraction
  • Water & Oil Cooled: The GT2871R requires both oil and water (coolant) connections for the CHRA — oil for bearing lubrication and water for thermal management of the centre housing. Both oil feed/return and coolant connections must be properly plumbed during installation. Do not operate without both oil and coolant connected
  • 300–475 HP Power Range: The GT2871R is rated for 300 to 475 horsepower depending on application, engine displacement, boost pressure, and tune. On a 2.0L engine (e.g. SR20DET), expect the upper range to be in the 400–450 HP region at aggressive boost levels with supporting modifications. On a 2.5L engine, the turbo may reach its efficiency limit at lower boost levels — consult your tuner for application-specific power targets
  • Genuine Garrett Quality: Garrett Motion is the world’s leading turbocharger manufacturer with over 65 years of engineering experience across OEM, motorsport, and aftermarket applications. The GT2871R is a genuine Garrett product — not a clone or replica — manufactured to Garrett’s quality and durability standards

Common Applications

  • Nissan SR20DET — S13 / S14 / S15 Silvia, 180SX, 240SX (with T25 manifold)
  • Nissan KA24DE — S13 / S14 240SX (with T25 manifold adapter)
  • Subaru EJ Series 2.0L / 2.5L — verify manifold fitment
  • Mazda BP / KL Series — verify manifold fitment
  • Universal — any 2.0L–2.5L application with T25 turbine inlet and appropriate supporting hardware

⚠️ Installation Notes: Professional installation by an experienced turbo builder or performance shop is required. An ECU retune is mandatory after installation — do not run elevated boost on an untuned ECU. Oil feed line must be restricted to the correct flow rate for ball bearing turbos — consult Garrett’s installation guidelines for oil feed specifications. Prime the turbo with oil before initial startup. Water cooling lines must be connected and free of air pockets before operation. Supporting modifications (fuel system, intercooler, intake, exhaust) will be required to reach the upper end of the power range — consult your tuner for a complete build plan.
