How It Works — Thermal Mass and Coolant Volume

The VR30DDTT’s water-to-air intercooler system uses a dedicated coolant loop to reject heat from the charge air after it exits the turbos. The factory intercooler coolant reservoir is a relatively small volume — under repeated hard pulls or sustained high-load driving, the coolant in the loop absorbs heat faster than it can reject it, causing the intercooler coolant temperature to rise and intercooler effectiveness to drop. This is heat soak — and it directly reduces power output as intake air temperatures climb.

AMS’s auxiliary tank solves this by adding more than 1.5 gallons of additional coolant volume into the intercooler loop. The larger coolant mass takes significantly longer to heat soak — the system has more thermal capacity to absorb heat before coolant temperatures rise to the point where intercooler effectiveness is compromised. AMS reports intercooler outlet temperature reductions of approximately 35°F with the tank installed, directly translating to cooler, denser intake air and more consistent power output across repeated runs.

Complementary to the Auxiliary Pump Kit

The Red Alpha auxiliary intercooler coolant tank works in conjunction with AMS’s auxiliary intercooler water pump kit (ALP.28.02.0003-1, for non-Red Sport vehicles) — the pump increases coolant flow rate through the intercooler loop, while the tank increases the total coolant volume and thermal mass. For maximum intercooler system performance, both upgrades can be run together. The tank is also compatible with Red Sport trim vehicles that already have the factory dual-pump setup but want to increase coolant volume and thermal capacity further.
