COMP Cams Magnum Hydraulic Roller Camshaft – Big Block Chevy (BBC) | 283° Advertised Duration | Street / Strip | 11-606-5

The COMP Cams Magnum series hydraulic roller camshaft for Big Block Chevy (BBC) engines delivers a proven street/strip performance profile — engineered for maximum power and torque gains on 396, 402, 427, 454, and 502 c.i.d. Big Block Chevy applications. The Magnum series is COMP Cams’ core hydraulic roller performance cam line, designed to work with a wide range of cylinder head, intake, and induction combinations for street-driven and dual-purpose street/strip builds.

⚠️ Critical Fitment Warning – Read Before Ordering:

1965–1966 Chevrolet 396 c.i.d. engines have an oiling groove machined into the rear camshaft journal of the block. This camshaft (11-606-5) does not have the corresponding groove and will not fit 1965–1966 396 c.i.d. engines. Installing this cam in a 1965–1966 396 block will result in improper oiling to the rear cam bearing and potential engine damage. If your engine is a 1965–1966 396 c.i.d., contact us before ordering — a different COMP Cams part number with the rear journal oiling groove is required for your application.

COMP Cams Magnum Series – Hydraulic Roller

The Magnum series uses a hydraulic roller lifter profile — combining the maintenance-free operation of a hydraulic cam (no periodic valve lash adjustment required) with the reduced friction, faster ramp rates, and higher RPM capability of a roller lobe profile. Hydraulic roller cams are the preferred choice for street and street/strip builds where drivability, reliability, and strong mid-to-upper RPM power are priorities.

Key Features

  • Hydraulic Roller Lobe Profile: Roller lifter compatibility eliminates the sliding friction of flat-tappet cams, allowing more aggressive lobe profiles with faster opening and closing ramp rates — improving airflow efficiency and power output across the RPM range. Hydraulic operation eliminates the need for periodic valve lash adjustment, making this cam suitable for street-driven vehicles
  • 283° Advertised Duration: 283° advertised duration places this cam in the upper-mid performance range for street/strip BBC applications — providing strong mid-to-upper RPM power and a noticeable performance cam idle character, while retaining acceptable street manners with appropriate supporting modifications (cylinder heads, intake, carburetor or fuel injection, compression ratio). Verify this duration is appropriate for your specific build targets and supporting components before ordering
  • Big Block Chevy Platform: Engineered specifically for the Big Block Chevy (Mark IV / Gen V / Gen VI) engine family — covering 396, 402, 427, 454, and 502 c.i.d. displacements. Uses the standard BBC cam bearing journal dimensions and firing order
  • COMP Cams Magnum Quality: COMP Cams is one of the most respected camshaft manufacturers in the performance aftermarket — with decades of experience in cam design, metallurgy, and lobe profile engineering for street, strip, and racing applications. Magnum series cams are manufactured to COMP Cams’ precision tolerances and surface finish specifications

Note: A complete cam installation requires matching hydraulic roller lifters, pushrods of the correct length for your specific head and block combination, and a valve spring upgrade appropriate for the cam’s lift and RPM range — consult COMP Cams’ cam card and tech resources for the correct supporting components. Degree the camshaft during installation to verify correct installed centerline. An engine dyno tune or carburetor/fuel injection recalibration is recommended after installation to optimise the air/fuel ratio and ignition timing for the new cam profile. Contact us if you have questions about fitment or supporting component selection for your specific build.
