The “NEO” designation on Cusco’s fluid lineup indicates a revised and improved formulation relative to the original Cusco LSD Oil (010 001 L01). The NEO formula retains the same 80W-90 viscosity, API GL-5 specification, mineral base, and LSD-compatible friction profile, but incorporates an updated additive package developed to improve:

• Clutch engagement feel: More consistent and progressive LSD ramp engagement across the operating temperature range — reduced chatter on slow-speed cornering (a common characteristic of clutch-type LSDs that can be temperature and fluid-dependent).
• Service life: Improved oxidation resistance and thermal stability extend the fluid’s effective service interval compared to the original formulation, even though both are mineral-base oils.

Why LSD-Specific Fluid Is Required

Clutch-type and plate-type limited slip differentials rely on controlled friction between clutch discs and pressure plates to manage torque distribution. Standard GL-5 gear oils — including those meeting the same 80W-90 and GL-5 specifications — typically contain friction modifier additives designed to reduce friction between metal surfaces. In an open differential or hypoid gear set, this is desirable. In a mechanical LSD clutch pack, friction modifiers reduce the clutch engagement force, causing the LSD to slip rather than lock progressively — reducing locking effectiveness and accelerating clutch wear. Cusco’s LSD Oil NEO is formulated without these friction modifiers, maintaining the correct friction coefficient for proper LSD operation.

80W-90 Viscosity — GL-5 Specification

API GL-5 is the required specification for hypoid differential gear sets operating under high pressure and shock loading conditions — the standard for rear differentials. 80W-90 is a conventional viscosity grade appropriate for rear differential use in moderate to cold climates. Not suitable for most manual transmissions with brass or bronze synchros due to the sulphur-phosphorus extreme pressure (EP) additives in GL-5 formulations.

Mineral Base — Service Intervals

The NEO formula is a mineral (conventional) base oil. Despite the improved additive package, mineral-base fluids have shorter recommended change intervals than full-synthetic equivalents.
