1-Piece Conversion — Why It Matters

The stock 5th gen Camaro uses a 2-piece driveshaft with a center support bearing (carrier bearing) midway along its length. The 2-piece design was chosen by GM to manage driveline angles and resonance in the factory configuration, but it introduces a center support bearing that can wear and become a maintenance point, and the joint at the center creates a potential vibration source under high-power or high-RPM conditions.

Converting to a 1-piece driveshaft eliminates the center support bearing entirely. A properly engineered 1-piece shaft has no intermediate joint to generate harmonic vibration and no bearing to wear. Combined with the larger 3.5-inch diameter tube, the result is a stiffer, more durable driveshaft with a higher critical RPM (whirl speed) — important for high-power ZL1 builds where driveline loads are well beyond stock.

3.5-Inch Aluminum Tube

• Diameter Upgrade: The 3.5-inch tube diameter is larger than the stock shaft. Torsional stiffness of a tube scales dramatically with diameter — a larger diameter tube handles more torque with less twist for the same wall thickness and material
• Aluminum Construction: Aluminum is significantly lighter than steel for the same tube dimensions, reducing rotational inertia. Less rotating mass in the driveshaft means faster engine RPM response and more power reaching the rear wheels
• Critical RPM: Larger diameter shafts have a higher critical RPM (the speed at which the shaft begins to whirl). This is particularly important for high-power or extended-RPM applications
