FRP Shell Construction

The FRP-304BK-NRG uses a fibreglass reinforced plastic (FRP) shell — the standard construction for the accessible-performance bucket seat tier:

• vs OEM seats: Significantly lighter and more compact than a padded OEM seat. Eliminates the fore-aft adjustment mechanism, recliner, airbag module, and seat heating/cooling systems, reducing weight and moving the occupant lower and further back in the car. The bucket shape provides lateral support through cornering that foam OEM seats cannot match.
• vs carbon fibre seats: FRP is heavier and less stiff than a carbon shell. A carbon seat (Recaro Pole Position, Sparco QRT-R, etc.) at a similar width will weigh 6–12 lbs vs an FRP seat’s 15–25 lbs. For street use and non-competitive track days, FRP provides adequate rigidity at a significantly lower price point than carbon.
• vs steel frame seats: FRP is lighter than steel-framed seats (Sparco Sprint, OMP HTE etc.) which use a steel structure with removable padding. Preference between FRP and steel frame is partly personal — steel frames allow padding replacement and are often more durable to impacts.

X-Large Sizing — Selecting the Right Size

Bucket seat sizing is determined primarily by the occupant’s hip width at the widest point — not height or weight alone. The seat shell must hold the occupant firmly within the bolsters for lateral support to function effectively:

• Too large: The occupant’s hips don’t contact the bolsters — the seat provides no lateral support and the occupant slides in cornering. Effectively worse than an OEM seat for performance driving.
• Too small: The bolsters compress the occupant’s hips — uncomfortable for extended use, difficult to enter and exit, and potentially restrictive in an emergency.
• X-Large: NRG’s XL shell is their widest standard option, accommodating occupants with larger hip dimensions. Measure your hip width at the widest point in a seated position and compare to NRG’s published shell width dimensions before ordering. If you are between sizes, the smaller size typically provides better lateral support; the larger size provides more comfort for daily use.

Harness Compatibility

The FRP-304BK-NRG includes shoulder harness openings in the seat back for routing a 4, 5, or 6-point harness. Important harness installation guidance:

• Shoulder belt angle: For a harness to function correctly in a collision, the shoulder belts must exit the seat back at or slightly below the occupant’s shoulder height — never more than 20 degrees above the shoulder. An angled shoulder belt pulls the occupant into the seat base rather than restraining forward movement. Confirm harness routing geometry relative to your seat mounting height before use.
• Harness bar or cage required: The shoulder belts of a multi-point harness must attach to a harness bar, roll cage, or properly rated mounting point. Attaching to OEM seatbelt anchor points is generally not appropriate for a 4–6 point harness — the geometry and load capacity are designed for a different belt path.
• With OEM seatbelt: If using the car’s OEM 3-point seatbelt instead of a harness, confirm the belt path is correct and the buckle location is accessible and properly positioned for the occupant in the new seat position.

Seat Bracket — Required, Sold Separately

The FRP-304BK-NRG does not include mounting hardware or vehicle-specific brackets. Installation requires:

• A vehicle-specific side mount bracket set compatible with NRG’s FRP seat mounting interface — available from NRG and third-party bracket manufacturers for most popular sport compact and JDM platforms.
• Seat rails (sliders) if fore-aft adjustment is desired — fixed mounts without sliders are lighter and more rigid but eliminate seat position adjustment.
