What Steering Rack Bushings Do

The steering rack is mounted to the subframe via two bushings — one at each end of the rack housing. The OEM bushings are rubber, which provides compliance and noise isolation but allows the rack to shift slightly under steering load. As OEM rubber ages and hardens unevenly, this movement increases, contributing to the vague or imprecise on-centre feel common on higher-mileage WRX and STI platforms. PERRIN’s polyurethane bushings are significantly stiffer than OEM rubber, reducing rack micro-movement under lateral steering forces. The result is a more direct, consistent connection between steering input and rack response — noticeable as improved on-centre feel, tighter turn-in, and reduced steering dead zone. Compared to powertrain mounts like the pitch stop, steering rack bushings have a lower NVH impact — the rack is not a vibration source in the same way as engine and transmission mounts, so the transition to polyurethane here is generally well-tolerated on street cars.

The PSP-SUS-564 replaces both OEM steering rack mount bushings as a set. Polyurethane provides superior shape retention over OEM rubber under sustained lateral load, resists compression set over time, and maintains consistent stiffness across the temperature range experienced in a Subaru engine bay and subframe environment. Fitment — WRX vs STI Difference

The PSP-SUS-564 covers different year ranges for WRX and STI due to a rack geometry change on the VA WRX (2015+):

• WRX GD — 2005–2007
• WRX GH/GE — 2008–2011
• WRX GJ/GP — 2012–2014
• STI GD — 2005–2007
• STI GH — 2008–2011
• STI GJ/GP — 2011–2014
• STI VA — 2015–2021

The 2015–2021 WRX (VA chassis) uses a different steering rack mounting geometry and is not compatible with the PSP-SUS-564. The 2015–2021 STI (also VA chassis) retains the same rack mount geometry as earlier STI generations and is covered. If you own a 2015+ WRX, do not order this part — confirm the correct PERRIN bushing part number for the VA WRX rack before purchasing.
