Power Stop Z23 Evolution Sport Rear Brake Kit | 1994–1998 Nissan 240SX | S14 | CK1174-23
Power Stop Z23 Evolution Sport Rear Brake Kit – 1994–1998 Nissan 240SX | S14 | CK1174-23
Fits 1994–1998 Nissan 240SX (S14 chassis) — rear axle only. This kit covers both rear rotors and both sets of rear brake pads. It does not include front rotors or pads — a separate front brake kit is required for a complete axle-to-axle upgrade. Not compatible with the 1989–1994 240SX (S13 chassis), which uses a different rear brake specification. Confirm your chassis generation before ordering.
Power Stop CK1174-23 Z23 Evolution Sport rear brake kit for the 1994–1998 Nissan 240SX (S14). Includes a matched set of drilled and slotted Geomet-coated rotors and Power Stop’s Z23 ceramic compound brake pads for both rear corners. A complete bolt-on rear brake upgrade for street driving, spirited road use, and non-dedicated-competition track days. 18.4 lbs. Ships fast across Canada and the US.
Z23 Evolution Sport — What’s in the Kit
The CK1174-23 combines two Power Stop components into a single rear kit:
- Drilled and slotted Geomet-coated rotors (pair): Cast iron rotors with a cross-drilled and slotted friction surface, and Power Stop’s Geomet zinc-based coating applied to the hat, vanes, and non-swept rotor faces. The drilling and slotting channels heat and gas away from the pad-rotor interface during hard braking, improving fade resistance and wet-weather performance. The Geomet coating prevents the orange surface rust that develops on uncoated cast iron rotors within hours of moisture exposure — the swept rotor face wears to clean metal on first use; the hat and edges remain corrosion-resistant throughout the rotor’s life.
- Z23 ceramic brake pads (both rear axle positions): Power Stop’s Z23 compound is a ceramic-based formulation designed for street and occasional performance driving. Lower brake dust output than semi-metallic compounds, quieter operation than aggressive metallic pads, and higher temperature capability than OEM organic compound pads. Each pad is chamfered at the leading/trailing edges and has noise-reduction slots to minimise brake squeal during normal use.
S14 Rear Brake Context
The 1994–1998 Nissan 240SX (S14) uses rear disc brakes at all corners — a single-piston sliding caliper rear setup shared with the S14 Silvia and 200SX of the same generation. The rear brakes on the S14 are adequate for OEM-level driving but become the limitation under sustained hard braking, track use, and spirited driving where heat build-up in the stock pads and rotor mass causes fade:
- Pad fade: OEM organic pads have a relatively low sustained-heat threshold. Under repeated hard braking, pad temperature exceeds the compound’s effective range and friction coefficient drops — the brake pedal becomes less effective for the same input. The Z23 compound’s higher temperature range delays this transition.
- Rotor mass and heat capacity: The drilled and slotted rotor design helps manage rotor surface temperature by channelling gases produced at the pad-rotor interface and providing additional surface area for convective cooling. For dedicated track use requiring sustained high brake temperatures, a two-piece floating rotor setup provides greater heat capacity, but for street and track day use the Z23 rotors are a significant step up from OEM.
- Drift applications: S14 builds used for drift typically manage rear brake bias separately via proportioning valve adjustment or hydraulic handbrake. The Z23 kit improves rear brake performance for street and light track use; for competition drift-specific rear brake requirements, additional brake system modifications may be necessary.
S14 vs S13 — Confirm Your Chassis
The Nissan 240SX was sold across two chassis generations in North America:
- S13 (1989–1994): First-generation 240SX — hatchback, fastback, and convertible body styles. Different rear brake rotor diameter and caliper specification. Not covered by CK1174-23.
- S14 (1994–1998): Second-generation 240SX — coupe body style (the “kouki” S14 covers 1997–1998; “zenko” covers 1995–1996; North American market launch was 1995 for most markets, though some sources list 1994). Confirm your specific year and chassis code before ordering. This kit is listed for the S14 generation.
Installation
The Z23 kit is a direct bolt-on replacement for the S14’s rear brake components — no modifications required. Remove the OEM rear rotors and pads, install the new Power Stop rotors and Z23 pads, and bed the brakes using a proper bedding procedure before returning to normal driving:
- Bed-in procedure: perform 6–10 progressive brake applications from 50–60 km/h down to 10 km/h, allowing the brakes to cool between applications. This transfers a thin, even layer of pad material onto the rotor surface and ensures consistent performance from the first hard stop.
- Avoid hard stops for the first 300–500 km after installation to allow full break-in of the pad compound.
S14 240SX 1994–1998 only — not for S13. Rear axle kit only — front kit sold separately. Bed-in procedure required after installation. Includes both rear rotors and both sets of rear pads.
