Project Mu HC+ Front Brake Pads | Toyota Corolla AE86 | Levin / Trueno | PHF186
Project Mu HC+ Front Brake Pads – Toyota Corolla AE86 | Levin / Trueno | PHF186
Front axle pads only — covers all AE86 Levin and Sprinter Trueno variants (coupe and hatchback). Rear pads for the AE86 are a separate product. These pads are designed for the AE86’s front caliper specification — confirm your AE86 has front disc brakes (standard on GT-Apex and higher trim levels; base models may have rear drums but all GT-Apex have 4-wheel discs front and rear). HC+ is a dual-purpose street/club track compound — it is not a cold-temperature-only race pad and retains meaningful cold bite for street use.
Project Mu PHF186 HC+ (High Carbon Plus) front brake pads for the Toyota Corolla AE86 — Levin and Sprinter Trueno, all body variants (coupe and hatchback), 1983–1987. Project Mu’s most popular dual-purpose compound: higher bite and temperature capability than OEM or street pads, with enough cold-bite for street use. Front axle set. Ships fast across Canada and the US.
Project Mu — Japanese Motorsport Compound Specialist
Project Mu was established in 1986 and has supplied brake compounds to Japanese motorsport continuously since — Super GT, Formula 4, gymkhana, time attack, and club racing across multiple decades. Their compound development is grounded in active motorsport use rather than street-only engineering. The AE86 has been one of Project Mu’s core supported platforms from the beginning, given the car’s enduring presence in Japanese club motorsport from the mid-1980s through the present day.
HC+ Compound — High Carbon Plus
HC+ (High Carbon Plus) is Project Mu’s street-performance to aggressive club track compound — the most versatile position in their lineup:
- Operating temperature range: Approximately 0–700°C. The lower bound of that range is meaningful — HC+ provides useful friction from a cold state, unlike pure race compounds (Project Mu’s SC or Racing lines) that require heat to reach effective friction. This makes HC+ usable on a street-driven car where the first brake applications of the day are cold.
- Initial bite: Significantly higher than OEM organic or standard ceramic compounds. Pedal feel is more immediate and progressive across the temperature range — the AE86’s relatively modest servo-assisted braking system benefits from the improved initial response.
- Rotor compatibility: HC+ is compatible with standard OEM-specification cast iron rotors and is not excessively aggressive on rotor wear at street and club track temperatures. For an AE86 used primarily on track, pairing with a Project Mu or equivalent slotted rotor is recommended to manage heat and gas build-up under sustained braking.
- Dust: Higher dust output than OEM or ceramic street pads — expected for a performance compound. Not appropriate for buyers prioritising clean wheels.
Why HC+ for the AE86
The AE86’s front brake system uses a relatively small single-piston caliper and modest rotor diameter by modern standards. The car’s low kerb weight (~900 kg) means it requires less brake force per stop than heavier modern cars, but the limited rotor thermal mass means temperatures can climb quickly under sustained track braking despite the lower weight. Two factors make HC+ particularly well-suited:
- Temperature window match: Full race compounds (Project Mu SC, Endless RF650, etc.) require sustained high brake temperatures to reach their effective friction range — temperatures the AE86 may not consistently generate in club or gymkhana use where braking zones are short. HC+’s lower minimum temperature threshold means the compound is working effectively across the AE86’s actual brake temperature range in most performance applications.
- Street usability: Many AE86s used in club motorsport are road-registered and driven to events. HC+ retains sufficient cold-bite and low-speed performance for safe road use — pure race compounds do not.
AE86 Fitment — All Variants
The PHF186 covers all AE86 body and trim variants that share the standard front caliper specification:
- Toyota Corolla Levin — 2-door coupe (AE86)
- Toyota Corolla Levin — 3-door hatchback (AE86)
- Toyota Sprinter Trueno — 2-door coupe (AE86)
- Toyota Sprinter Trueno — 3-door hatchback (AE86)
All GT-Apex trim level AE86s use 4-wheel disc brakes — the front caliper and pad specification is consistent across Levin and Trueno body styles. Base and SR trim levels had rear drums but retained front discs. Production: 1983–1987 (Japanese domestic market production; import and grey market examples follow the same chassis specification).
Front pads only — rear sold separately. HC+ dual-purpose compound — street and club track use. Higher dust than OEM. All AE86 Levin and Trueno variants. Bed-in procedure recommended after installation.
