The Track Bar and Why Bushings Matter

The front track bar (panhard bar) on the Super Duty’s solid front axle laterally locates the axle — it prevents the front axle from shifting side-to-side under cornering loads and road inputs. The track bar runs diagonally from a frame mount on the driver’s side to an axle mount on the passenger’s side, holding the axle centred under the chassis.

Worn or deteriorated track bar bushings allow the axle to shift laterally, introducing play into the front axle’s lateral position. This manifests as front-end wander, vague or imprecise steering, and — particularly on solid front axle trucks — can contribute to the high-speed oscillation known as death wobble. Replacing worn rubber bushings with polyurethane significantly reduces this deflection, restoring accurate axle location and improving steering response and front-end stability.

Prothane Polyurethane

Prothane’s polyurethane compound is harder than the OEM rubber bushings, reducing bushing deflection under load for more precise axle location and improved steering feedback.
