Rear Trailing Arms — What They Do
The rear trailing arms locate the rear knuckle and hub assembly longitudinally relative to the chassis — they resist the fore-aft forces acting on the rear wheel under acceleration and braking. The trailing arm bushings are the pivot points that allow the arm to move as the suspension travels through its range of motion.
OEM rubber trailing arm bushings are designed with some compliance — they flex slightly under load, which contributes to ride quality and NVH absorption. However, this flex also allows the rear wheel to move slightly fore and aft under hard cornering, acceleration, and braking loads, shifting the rear toe and camber geometry away from the static alignment setting. In a performance context, this deflection means the rear suspension is not behaving exactly as the alignment specifies under the loads that matter most.
Why Stiffer Bushings
Torque Solution’s TS-SU-549 bushings are significantly stiffer than OEM rubber, reducing compliance deflection in the trailing arm under load. The result is rear wheel geometry that stays closer to the static alignment setting during cornering, braking, and acceleration. On a performance or track build, this translates to more predictable rear-end behaviour, more consistent mid-corner balance, and better exit traction as the rear geometry doesn’t shift mid-corner. These are particularly effective when combined with other rear suspension bushing upgrades (lateral links, toe links) as part of a comprehensive rear geometry improvement.
