Wagner Tuning Competition Front-Mount Intercooler Kit – Subaru WRX / WRX STI | 2007–2013 | GR / GV | 200001110

Fits 2007–2013 Subaru WRX and WRX STI (GR/GV chassis). This kit replaces the OEM top-mount intercooler (TMIC) with a front-mount intercooler (FMIC) — confirm your vehicle’s front bumper and undertray are compatible with FMIC installation before ordering. An ECU tune calibrated for the new intercooler and charge piping volume is strongly recommended after installation to realise the full benefit of reduced charge temperatures. Not a bolt-on emissions-legal modification in all jurisdictions — confirm local regulations.

Wagner Tuning 200001110 Competition front-mount intercooler kit for the 2007–2013 Subaru WRX and WRX STI. Eliminates the OEM top-mount intercooler and replaces it with Wagner’s maximum-spec Competition core and full charge piping kit. Built for high-power and track use where heat soak from the OEM TMIC is a consistent performance limiter. 27 lbs. Ships fast across Canada and the US.

OEM Top-Mount vs Front-Mount — Why FMIC on the GR/GV

The 2007–2013 WRX and STI use a top-mount intercooler (TMIC) positioned above the engine, fed by a hood scoop. The TMIC layout is compact and provides fast throttle response due to the short charge path, but has a fundamental thermal limitation: it sits in the hottest part of the engine bay and absorbs heat from the engine block, cylinder head, and exhaust manifold. Under repeated hard acceleration, heat soak builds rapidly in the TMIC core — charge air temperatures rise significantly even as ambient airflow through the hood scoop continues.

The effects of TMIC heat soak on the EJ207 and EJ255:

  • Elevated intake air temperature (IAT): Hot charge air is less dense, reducing the mass of oxygen entering the cylinder per intake stroke. Power output drops proportionally.
  • Knock sensitivity: Hotter charge air increases the tendency for pre-ignition (knock) — the ECU retards ignition timing in response, further reducing power and increasing exhaust temperature.
  • Inconsistent power delivery: On track or in back-to-back pulls, power drops noticeably after the first run as the TMIC heat-soaks. An FMIC’s charge air is continuously cooled by ambient airflow through the front bumper — thermal performance remains consistent lap after lap.

Wagner Competition Specification

The 200001110 is Wagner’s Competition-tier intercooler kit — their maximum-specification core for the GR/GV platform. Wagner’s Competition cores use a bar-and-plate construction with high-density fin geometry, maximising the heat exchange surface area within the available front bumper opening. Key characteristics of the Competition spec vs street or performance alternatives:

  • Maximum core volume: Larger core = greater thermal mass and greater heat exchange surface. The Competition core is sized to the limit of what fits the GR/GV front bumper opening without modification.
  • Flow capacity: Core flow capacity exceeds the requirements of high-power EJ builds — suitable for boosted, E85, or heavily modified WRX and STI applications where a smaller core would become a restriction.
  • Full kit: Includes the intercooler core, end tanks, and all charge piping required to complete the TMIC-to-FMIC conversion. No additional piping sourcing required.

WRX and STI Coverage — EJ255 and EJ207

The 200001110 covers both the WRX (EJ255, 2008–2014 GV) and WRX STI (EJ207, 2007–2013 GR/GV). Both engines benefit significantly from FMIC conversion:

  • WRX (EJ255): Stock boost is lower than the STI but the EJ255 is very commonly tuned to higher boost on the GV platform. TMIC heat soak limits tuned power output and consistency. FMIC conversion is one of the highest-impact modifications for a tuned GV WRX.
  • STI (EJ207): Higher stock boost pressure than the WRX makes the STI even more sensitive to TMIC heat soak. The EJ207’s knock sensitivity and IAT-based timing correction mean TMIC heat soak directly translates to timing pull and power loss. The Competition FMIC is appropriate for STI builds from mild tune to full built-engine high-boost applications.

Installation and Tuning Notes

FMIC installation requires removal of the front bumper cover and OEM TMIC assembly. The charge piping routes through the engine bay to the front-mount core — professional installation is recommended. After installation, an ECU tune is strongly recommended: the larger charge piping volume changes the intake air volume between the MAF sensor and throttle body, which affects closed-loop fuel trim accuracy on MAF-based ECU systems. A tune calibrated for the FMIC configuration will fully realise the charge temperature reduction and allow safe advancement of boost and timing targets.

Replaces OEM TMIC — front bumper removal required for installation. ECU tune recommended after installation. Confirm local emissions regulations before purchasing. 27 lbs full kit.
