Why ProMaster Owners Install Air Springs

The Ram ProMaster is a capable commercial cargo van, but its factory rear suspension is calibrated for a compromise between unloaded ride comfort and loaded stability. Under a significant cargo load — tools, equipment, product, shelving, or a loaded racks system — the rear suspension sags, creating a nose-up attitude and a chain of handling problems:

• Squat: Rear sag shifts weight rearward, reducing front axle load and front traction.
• Poor headlight aim: The nose-up attitude angles headlights upward, reducing forward visibility and blinding oncoming drivers.
• Trailer sway: A sagging rear hitch point amplifies trailer oscillation under towing loads.
• Body roll: Reduced suspension travel in the loaded state increases lateral body movement in corners.
• Bottoming out: Insufficient remaining suspension travel causes harsh bottoming over bumps and rough roads.

The LoadLifter 5000 eliminates all of these by supplementing the factory rear suspension with adjustable air spring pressure that compensates for the load — restoring level ride height, correct headlight aim, and stable handling regardless of what’s in the van.

5–100 PSI Adjustable — Load-Matched Pressure

Air pressure is adjusted to match the load — lower pressure when unloaded (near-stock ride quality), higher pressure as cargo weight increases. The 5–100 PSI range covers everything from an empty van to a fully loaded ProMaster. Pressure can be adjusted at any time using an air compressor, a portable inflator, or an optional Air Lift inflation system with cab-mounted controls. Note: do not exceed the vehicle’s GVWR regardless of air spring pressure — air springs level the vehicle and improve handling but do not increase the rated payload.

Air Lift Exclusive — Upper and Lower Roll Plates

Each kit includes Air Lift’s exclusive upper and lower roll plates installed on each air spring. The roll plates serve two functions: protecting the air spring body from sharp edges on the suspension components, and increasing the effective load capacity by 10% by controlling the spring’s roll and expansion geometry under load. No other manufacturer’s standard air spring kit includes this feature.

Construction — Built Like a Tyre

The air springs are constructed like a tyre — 2-ply reinforced fabric embedded in the rubber body for maximum burst strength and long service life under cyclic load. End caps are moulded from an ultra-high-strength nylon composite described by Air Lift as “strong as steel” — corrosion-proof and significantly lighter than metal equivalents. Key suspension components including the air springs and all hardware have been tested to 1 million cycles on Air Lift’s hydraulic test rig — the equivalent of 100,000 miles of service.

Installation — No Frame Drilling

The LoadLifter 5000 kit uses an under-frame design that works with most in-bed hitches and requires no drilling into the frame or chassis. Installs using common hand tools with clear, step-by-step instructions included. Compatible with most aftermarket in-bed hitch systems.
