AutoMeter Carbon Fiber 52mm Electronic Oil Temperature Gauge – 140–300°F | Universal | 4748

Universal fitment — requires a 1/8" NPT port in your oil system. The included sender threads into a 1/8" NPT port in the oil pan, oil sandwich adapter, or remote filter line. Many stock oil pans do not have a dedicated sender port — an oil sandwich adapter or aftermarket oil pan with a 1/8" NPT bung will be required. Single wire + ground installation — confirm your vehicle’s electrical system is compatible with a resistive sender gauge before ordering.

AutoMeter 4748 Carbon Fiber series 52mm electronic oil temperature gauge for the 140–300°F range. AutoMeter’s patented air core meter movement delivers accurate, vibration-resistant needle positioning from the included 1/8" NPT temperature sender. No oil lines in the cabin — the sender stays in the engine bay, signal travels via a single wire to the gauge. 52mm diameter matches the AutoMeter Carbon Fiber boost gauge (4704) for a paired installation. 1 lb. Ships fast across Canada and the US.

Why Monitor Oil Temperature

Oil temperature is one of the most informative and most commonly overlooked engine parameters on a performance build. An engine running excessively high oil temperature will fail — oil viscosity drops as temperature rises, reducing film thickness at critical bearing surfaces, and oil oxidation and breakdown accelerate significantly above 250°F. Oil temperature monitoring provides actionable data:

  • Confirm warm-up: Oil reaches operating temperature well after the coolant temperature gauge stabilises. Tracking oil temp ensures the engine is fully warmed before hard driving — important for bearing longevity on boosted and high-revving applications.
  • Validate oil cooler performance: An oil cooler’s effectiveness can only be confirmed with a temperature gauge. If oil temps remain high after installing a cooler, the cooler is undersized, poorly positioned, or has inadequate airflow — a gauge makes this diagnosable.
  • Monitor track and sustained load sessions: Oil temperatures climb significantly during track sessions and extended high-load driving. Knowing when oil temp enters the warning range (250°F+) allows the driver to take corrective action before damage occurs.
  • Confirm oil weight selection: Oil viscosity is matched to operating temperature. If your engine consistently runs above 230°F, a heavier viscosity or oil cooler upgrade may be warranted. The gauge provides the data to make that decision.

Electronic — Air Core Movement

The 4748 is an electronic gauge — the temperature sender threads into the oil system and sends a resistance signal via a single wire to the gauge. The gauge interprets the sender’s resistance and positions the needle using AutoMeter’s patented air core meter movement:

  • Air core movement: Two wire coils arranged at 90° to each other create a rotating magnetic field that positions the needle in proportion to the sender signal. More accurate and more resistant to vibration-induced needle oscillation than traditional D’Arsonval pivot movements — important in an engine bay or performance driving environment where vibration is constant.
  • No oil lines in the cabin: Unlike a mechanical oil temperature gauge (which would route hot oil to the gauge), the electronic sender keeps all oil connections in the engine bay. The cabin wiring carries only a low-voltage signal.

140–300°F Range — What the Numbers Mean

The gauge’s range covers the full spectrum of practical oil temperatures from cold start through critical operating conditions:

  • 140–180°F: Cold to partially warmed. Do not apply full load at these temperatures — oil viscosity is higher than design and film formation at bearings is suboptimal.
  • 180–230°F: Normal operating range for most street-driven engines. Oil is at design viscosity, film strength is optimal.
  • 230–260°F: Warm — acceptable under sustained track or towing load. Consider an oil cooler if temperatures consistently reach this range in street driving.
  • 260–280°F: Hot — oil oxidation accelerates, viscosity is dropping. Reduce load, investigate cooling. Shorten oil change intervals if sustained.
  • 280–300°F: Critical — risk of oil breakdown, bearing film failure. Reduce load immediately. Oil cooler upgrade required.

Installation — Sender and Wiring

The 4748 includes a 1/8" NPT temperature sender and single-wire wiring connection. Installation requires:

  • A 1/8" NPT port in the oil system — oil pan, sandwich adapter, or remote filter housing. Many stock oil pans do not have this port and will require an oil sandwich adapter (fits between the engine block and oil filter) or an aftermarket oil pan with a 1/8" NPT bung.
  • A single wire run from the sender to the gauge signal input terminal.
  • A 12V ignition-switched power source and chassis ground at the gauge.
  • Illumination wiring if interior lighting is desired (connects to the vehicle’s dash lighting circuit).

Pairs with AutoMeter Carbon Fiber Boost Gauge (4704)

The 4748 is the same 52mm diameter, same Carbon Fiber series face design, and same AutoMeter gauge family as the Carbon Fiber 35 PSI mechanical boost gauge (4704). For builders monitoring both boost pressure and oil temperature, the two gauges install as a matched pair in a dual-gauge pod with a consistent face appearance.

Universal fit — 1/8" NPT oil system port required (may need sandwich adapter). Single wire + ground wiring. Sender included. Pairs with AutoMeter 4704 Carbon Fiber boost gauge.
