Why Replace OEM Rubber Exhaust Hangers
The RZ34 Z uses rubber exhaust mount isolators — looped rubber hangers that suspend the exhaust system from chassis mounting points. Stock rubber serves well at OEM power levels and with the stock exhaust, but has two limitations relevant to a performance application:
- Deflection under load: Rubber mounts allow the exhaust system to move laterally and axially under hard acceleration, braking, and over rough surfaces. On the RZ34 with its VR30DDTT and a performance exhaust, this movement can cause contact between exhaust piping and adjacent chassis components or heat shields, producing rattles and potential wear points. Urethane’s higher durometer resists this deflection, keeping the exhaust system in its intended position.
- Heat degradation: The RZ34’s twin-turbocharged exhaust system operates at high temperatures. Repeated heat cycling accelerates rubber degradation — cracking, hardening, and eventually tearing — causing the exhaust to sag and contact nearby components. Urethane maintains its mechanical properties over a wider temperature range and through more heat cycles than rubber.
Urethane — Durometer and NVH
Torque Solution’s exhaust mounts use polyurethane at a durometer calibrated for exhaust mount applications — harder than OEM rubber for reduced deflection, but not so rigid as to transmit excessive vibration. The practical NVH difference between urethane and rubber exhaust hangers is minimal on a car with a performance exhaust (which already transmits more sound and vibration through the exhaust system than stock), and negligible when the car is driven with any degree of performance intent. For a daily-driven stock-exhaust RZ34, occupants may notice a marginal increase in exhaust note transmission at idle — expected and considered acceptable by virtually all buyers of urethane exhaust mounts.
Drop-In Kit — Full Hanger Set
The TS-EH-RZ34 includes urethane replacements for all OEM exhaust hanger locations on the RZ34 exhaust system. Installation requires no modification — remove the OEM rubber hangers and install the urethane equivalents. A rubber mallet or hanger removal tool is recommended to remove the OEM hangers without damaging the exhaust piping. Applying a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the urethane mounts eases installation.
