MLS Head Gasket — Surface Finish Requirement

MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) head gaskets require a properly prepared sealing surface to function correctly. The head and block deck surfaces must be clean, flat, and finished to the correct surface roughness — typically Ra 50 microinch (1.27 micron) or smoother. A rough or uneven deck surface will not compress the MLS layers evenly, resulting in a head gasket leak. If the head or block has not been recently machined, have both surfaces checked and decked by a machine shop before installation.

Top End Kit Contents

This is a top end (upper engine) kit — it covers the gaskets and seals for the cylinder head and related components. It does not include lower end gaskets (oil pan gasket, rear main seal, crankshaft seals). For a complete engine rebuild, a bottom end or full engine gasket kit is required in addition to this top end kit.

KA24DE Applications

The KA24DE is Nissan’s 2.4L DOHC 16-valve inline-4, used in the 1995–1998 S14 240SX. The engine is naturally aspirated in stock form but is widely used as the basis for KA-T (KA24DE turbocharged) builds, where the stock bottom end is retained and a turbocharger is added. A top end refresh with quality gaskets is appropriate for both NA rebuilds and KA-T builds where head removal is required for turbo preparation or after a head gasket failure.
