Rear Traction Rods — What They Do

The rear traction rod (tension rod / fore-aft link) is the suspension arm that controls the rear wheel’s fore-aft position on the 370Z’s independent rear suspension. Under hard acceleration, the OEM rubber bushings at the traction rod’s mounting points deflect under load — allowing the rear wheel to shift rearward and toe-out momentarily. This bushing deflection introduces inconsistency in rear traction, increases wheel hop potential on launch, and contributes to vagueness in the rear suspension’s response to throttle inputs.

Upgraded traction rods with polyurethane bushings significantly reduce this deflection, keeping the rear wheel in its correct fore-aft position under load. The result is more consistent rear traction on acceleration, reduced wheel hop, and improved rear suspension response — particularly noticeable on lowered cars where the increased static load on the rear arms amplifies the effect of OEM bushing deflection.

Street Series — Polyurethane Bushings

ISR’s Street Series uses polyurethane bushings — significantly harder than the OEM rubber for reduced deflection, while retaining enough compliance to remain appropriate for daily street driving without introducing excessive NVH (noise, vibration, harshness). For track-only builds requiring maximum rigidity, ISR’s Pro or spherical bearing variants provide further deflection reduction at the cost of increased harshness on road surfaces.
