Link ECU Knock Sensor – Donut Type | 8mm Hole | Universal | 101-0053
Universal knock sensor — confirm your engine block has an M8 knock sensor mounting boss before ordering. The donut-type mounting requires a flat, threaded M8 boss on the engine block — the sensor clamps flush against the block surface with an M8 bolt through the central hole. Not compatible with blocks requiring a thread-in (pencil-type) knock sensor. Correct placement on the block and ECU knock channel configuration by a qualified tuner is required for effective knock detection and engine protection.
Link ECU 101-0053 donut-type (annular) knock sensor for standalone ECU applications. Mounts flat against the engine block via an 8mm centre hole and M8 bolt. Includes the matching wiring connector. Universal fitment — compatible with any engine block with an M8 knock sensor mounting boss. Ships fast across Canada and the US.
Knock Sensing in a Standalone ECU System
A knock sensor is a piezoelectric vibration sensor mounted directly to the engine block. It detects the characteristic high-frequency vibration signature of engine knock — the abnormal combustion event (detonation or pre-ignition) that occurs when the air/fuel mixture ignites before the spark plug fires, or when combustion pressure peaks too early in the piston cycle. Left unaddressed, knock causes rapid and severe engine damage — particularly on boosted, high-compression, or aggressively timed engines.
In a standalone ECU system such as Link G4X or G4+, knock control works as follows:
- The knock sensor signal is wired to one of the ECU’s dedicated knock input channels.
- The ECU monitors the sensor’s voltage output in a tuner-defined frequency window corresponding to the engine’s knock frequency (determined by bore size).
- When signal amplitude in that window exceeds a threshold, the ECU retards ignition timing by a configured amount, then recovers timing gradually once knock is no longer detected.
- This closed-loop knock management allows the tuner to run more aggressive timing maps while maintaining a safety net against detonation under varying fuel quality, temperature, and load conditions.
Donut Type — 8mm Hole Mount
The 101-0053 uses the donut (annular) form factor — a flat disc-shaped sensor with a central 8mm hole. This is the OEM mounting style used on most Japanese performance engines, including:
- Subaru EJ and FA/FB series engines
- Mitsubishi 4G63 and 4B11 (Evo)
- Toyota 2JZ, 1JZ, 3S-GTE
- Nissan RB, SR20, CA18, VR38
- Honda K-series and B-series (select applications)
The sensor mounts by passing an M8 bolt through the centre hole into a threaded boss on the engine block. The flat sensor face clamps flush against the block surface, maximising mechanical coupling and signal transmission. Correct torque on the mounting bolt is important — undertorquing reduces coupling and signal quality; overtorquing can crack the sensor body.
Matching Connector Included
The 101-0053 ships with its matching wiring connector — the correct mating plug for the sensor’s terminal. Knock sensor connectors are sensor-specific and can be difficult to source separately. Having the correct connector included simplifies wiring harness fabrication during standalone ECU installation.
Link ECU Compatibility
The 101-0053 is sold by Link Engine Management as an accessory sensor for their standalone ECU range, including the G4X and G4+ platforms. It is also compatible with other standalone ECUs that accept a standard piezoelectric knock sensor input — confirm your ECU’s knock input voltage range and sensitivity specification matches the sensor’s output before installation.
M8 block mounting boss required. Donut type — not for thread-in (pencil) mounting. Matching connector included. ECU knock channel configuration by qualified tuner required for effective knock control.
