2-Stroke Marine Oil — What TC-W3 Means and Why It Matters

The NMMA TC-W3 certification is the universal standard for 2-stroke water-cooled marine engine oil:

• NMMA TC-W3: Defines minimum performance requirements for lubricity, anti-wear, corrosion protection, combustion cleanliness, and miscibility with gasoline for 2-stroke water-cooled marine engines. All modern 2-stroke PWC and outboard manufacturers specify TC-W3 or equivalent.
• TC-W3 vs motorcycle 2-stroke oil: Motorcycle and motocross 2-stroke oils (JASO FD, ISO-L-EGD) are not interchangeable with TC-W3 marine oil. Do not use motorcycle 2-stroke oil in a TC-W3-specified marine engine.
• Outboard compatibility: Mercury, Yamaha, Tohatsu, Suzuki, and Evinrude (discontinued) 2-stroke outboards specifying TC-W3 oil.

Technosynthese — Semi-Synthetic Base Oil

• Mineral + synthetic ester blend: Better thermal stability, film strength, and cleaner combustion than mineral-only 2-stroke oil. Meaningful step up from mineral at a practical price point for regular marine maintenance.
• Anti-fouling and anti-carbon deposit: Burns cleanly — minimising carbon buildup on the piston crown, exhaust port, and spark plug. Extends service intervals before exhaust port cleaning is required.

Premix and Oil Injection Compatibility

• Premix: Add directly to fuel at your engine’s specified ratio (typically 50:1 for modern engines, 40:1 for older designs). Mixes instantaneously with gasoline — no agitation required. At 50:1, each 4L bottle mixes with 200L of fuel; the case of 4 (16L) covers 800L of premix fuel.
• Oil injection / autolube / VRO: Appropriate for oil injection pump systems on most 2-stroke PWC and outboards. Fill the oil reservoir as needed.
