What a Blow Off Valve Does

On a turbocharged engine, closing the throttle rapidly under boost traps pressurised air between the throttle body and the turbo compressor outlet. This pressure spike forces air back through the compressor in reverse, causing the compressor wheel to stall — a condition known as compressor surge. Repeated surge events accelerate wear on the turbo’s thrust bearings and compressor wheel, and cause the characteristic flutter or chatter sound associated with an unprotected or improperly set-up turbo system. A blow off valve vents this trapped pressure when the throttle closes, allowing the compressor to continue spinning freely and spooling back up more quickly when the throttle reopens.
